How to calculate CBM for a shipment
CBM is cubic metres. For one carton, multiply length × width × height in metres. For a shipment, multiply by the number of cartons.
Worked example
A carton measures 60 cm × 40 cm × 40 cm, which is 0.6 × 0.4 × 0.4 = 0.096 CBM. With 200 cartons the shipment is 19.2 CBM.
Common mistakes
- Mixing centimetres and metres. Convert first: divide centimetres by 100.
- Using inner instead of outer carton dimensions.
- Treating CBM as the whole story. A container's usable volume is lower than its listed volume because cartons do not fill every gap, so check the real layout.
